Leticia Buhr was born on the Big Island and raised on Oahu. Her and her husband live in Aiea and have 2 children who are homeschooled and 3 other adult children, as well as 2 dogs, Sara and Jason. "We are quite an unconventional family because we believe that what we have is given to us and that we need to steward them the best we can," says Leticia. She has many talents that she likes to turn around and share with others. She teaches rubber stamping (making hand stamped cards), baking and she also enjoy taking pictures for church.

 

Cathy Nobriga Kim Cathy Nobriga Kim
Cathy Nobriga Kim started working part-time in the family business when she was just 15 years old. Today, Cathy is Board of Directors Treasurer as well as Vice President of Roselani Ice Cream, an extremely busy division of Maui Soda & Ice Works, Ltd. As the third-generation ice cream maker, she is also the creative force behind new flavors. As the wife of a prominent Maui attorney and the mother of three, she runs a busy household as well as participates in her children's educational and extra curricular activities. And as the only daughter in a family of five children, she also bears the many responsibilities that come with that role. In May 2006, Cathy faced the biggest challenge of her life when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, it was detected extremely early and after a short round of treatment, has been cancer-free.

 

Loreen Matsushima Loreen Matsushima
A visit to the KCC farmer's market is a weekly activity for Loreen Matsushima. The assortment of fresh produce from the farms of Hawaii inspires her to experiment in the kitchen. Her recipe contribution to The Hawaii Book of Rice is a recreation of a local staple, fried rice. Her "Hurry Curry Rice" dish combines rice with fresh vegetables, curry spice, and other ingredients. Loreen is the director of advertising and public relations at Atlantis Adventures; co-founder of 3 Ladles LLC, and an artist.

 

Mao Moeng Mao Moeng
Mao Moeng is a certified public accountant working as the controller at Hawaii 3R's, a non-profit organization which provides funding to repair, remodel, and restore public schools in Hawaii. Cooking is Mao's hobby (besides ballroom dancing) because she believes in the "eat-to-live" philosophy. She also believes simple cooking is good cooking and that love is the most important ingredient. Mao started cooking for her family in China when she was ten years old. Although she is a vegetarian, Mao enjoys cooking healthy meat dishes for her husband and friends. A native of China, Mao came to the US 15 years ago to realize her dream and make them come true.

 

Joan Murata Joan Murata
Cooking and baking has been one of Joan Murata's lifelong passions. She hosted many dinner parties for family and friends over the years and simply loves it. Her very first cookbook was Joe Pasternak's "Cooking with Love and Paprika" where she learned to cook Hungarian food like goulash. Since then she has amassed over 30 cookbooks from Japanese, Thai, Italian, Mexican, French, Chinese and more . She can't think of a more enjoyable evening than spending it with good friends, good food and good wine. She hopes you'll try her version of Ono Fried Rice.
